Start with the employer and distinguish the two permissions
An employee with employer-sponsored residence who is leaving the UAE permanently should arrange formal cancellation with the sponsor. The government portal describes an employer first approaching the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, MoHRE, to cancel the labour contract and labour card, followed by immigration cancellation. Resignation alone does not document completion of the employment and immigration transactions.
The portal says the employee signs the labour cancellation application and the company submits a signed acknowledgement that wages and end-of-service benefits have been received. Read that acknowledgement against the actual settlement before signing. The ordinary sponsor-led process described here concerns employment residence; someone with self-sponsored residence, a domestic-work permit or a different employment authority should use the service applicable to that record rather than assuming the same paperwork applies.
Keep the settlement deadline separate from immigration processing
Article 53 of the federal labour law requires the employer to pay wages and other entitlements within fourteen days after the employment contract ends. That is a payment obligation, rather than an immigration grace period or a promise that a residence cancellation takes fourteen days. Record the contract end date and distinguish an expected payment from money actually received when checking the settlement statement.
The law also explains that ordinary end-of-service gratuity for a qualifying foreign worker is calculated using basic wage, with provisions for different work patterns and possible lawful deductions. A settlement therefore needs its own calculation; the amount cannot safely be inferred from the residence cancellation fee or the employee’s latest total salary. This guide does not calculate an individual entitlement or resolve a disputed deduction. The linked legislation provides the underlying rules for reviewing that separate employment issue.
Ask the employer for the completed transaction record
MoHRE describes employee work-permit cancellation among the services available through the Work Bundle. The integrated platform links participating entities and uses UAE Pass, with unified information and payment arrangements intended to reduce repeated submissions. For an employee, the useful question is which transaction the employer has submitted and whether it has reached completion, rather than simply whether someone has opened an online request.
Ask the employer’s authorised representative for the cancellation result and the reference needed to follow the residence step. A statement that the company uses an integrated platform should not be treated as a personal confirmation that every linked record has already closed. Keep the employment settlement and the immigration result together so a later query can identify the relevant stage. The ministry’s explanation establishes the available service, but it does not establish a universal processing promise or a total price for an individual departure.
Prepare the Dubai documents and identify the listed charges
For Dubai, GDRFA’s residence-cancellation service lists the sponsor’s passport, the sponsored person’s passport and, for a private-sector employee, the MoHRE work-permit cancellation extract. This makes the earlier employment transaction a practical document dependency. Check that the extract and passports refer to the same worker before the sponsor submits the residence application.
The Dubai page provides digital submission and Amer centre routes. It lists AED100 for residence cancellation, plus AED10 each for the knowledge and innovation charges, and an expected completion time of forty-eight hours. Those displayed charges concern that residence service; they do not establish an all-inclusive employment settlement or a universal price across the UAE. Ask which listed charges apply to the selected transaction and retain its receipt. A published expected duration also does not confirm that an incomplete application will finish before a booked flight.
Resolve family sponsorship and check the actual departure deadline
ICP says sponsored family permits must be cancelled before the worker’s residence, or put on hold subject to conditions and fees. Its hold conditions include approval for a move to another employer and valid family permits; this is not an unconditional option for a permanent departure. Arrange the family sequence before the sponsor’s cancellation.
Grace periods require particular care. Dubai’s service page describes sixty days. ICP instead lists periods by category: ninety days for skilled workers in levels one to three and property owners, sixty for guarantor or host categories, thirty for others, and 180 for specified categories including Golden, Green and Blue residence. Check the actual permit’s deadline. ICP’s detailed fines line places the AED50 daily overstay charge after the applicable grace period, although a shorter line on the page omits that qualification. Check the authority’s record before departure.
