Students seeking university sponsorship in the UAE should apply before travelling
Government requirements and university instructions cover different stages, so an admission offer alone does not complete the residence process.

Choose the sponsor before starting the document file
This guide concerns students seeking residence through their university or college in the UAE. The government’s study-residence page also permits sponsorship by a parent who is a UAE resident, so not every international student needs to transfer to institutional sponsorship. Identify the intended sponsor before requesting forms or paying for a new application.
For student residence, the government asks for a certificate from the university or institute identifying the course duration, alongside the general residence requirements. Its guidance describes universities as facilitators of the visa process, rather than treating an academic admission as immigration approval. Students already holding family residence should ask the university which evidence of that existing status it needs. Outstanding-student Golden residence is a separate route; it should not be assumed to follow automatically from an ordinary university offer.
Use the Dubai service card for its specific transaction
Dubai’s GDRFA student-residence service identifies the educational institution as host and guarantor. Its document list includes a passport copy, a recent colour photograph on a white background, an approved medical examination, an Emirates ID receipt and health insurance. Some of those records arise after arrival, which is why a university’s initial entry-permit checklist may look shorter.
The service card lists AED200 for the residence permit, AED10 each for knowledge and innovation charges, AED500 for an inside-country transaction and AED20 delivery, with an additional annual issuance increment when residence exceeds two years. These are displayed service components, not a nationwide university package price. Its expected completion time is forty-eight hours for that service. It should not be read as the entire admission-to-arrival timetable, particularly when entry approval, medical checks and identity registration still need to occur. Confirm the applicable transaction with the sponsoring institution.
Check the university’s entry-stage checklist
Khalifa University’s undergraduate document sheet illustrates the earlier entry-permit stage. It asks students outside the UAE for an admission letter, a clear colour passport copy with at least six months’ validity, a professional photograph with a white background and the listed entry-visa evidence. It separately asks a person already holding a UAE visa for a cancellation copy. Do not cancel existing permission solely from this general comparison: ask the university how its checklist applies to the actual case.
The same sheet requests national identity copies from citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq and specifies filenames containing the document type, student name and university identifier. These are Khalifa’s institutional instructions, not proof that every university requests identical documents or that any nationality is guaranteed approval. The sheet is marked March 2024. Ask International Student Services whether it remains the applicable version before sending a file, especially where an existing visa or missing entry document makes the sequence unclear.
Plan both the pre-arrival and post-arrival stages
Canadian University Dubai asks overseas applicants to submit a colour passport copy, photograph and relevant visa payment through Admissions after paying tuition. It advises submission at least eight weeks before the semester and says the approved electronic visa is supplied before departure for presentation on arrival. That is the university’s planning instruction, rather than a universal government processing deadline.
Its post-arrival guidance sets a two-week period for completing residence formalities, including a designated-clinic medical examination and Emirates ID application, followed by submission of the resulting documents to the university’s visa desk. A student should therefore keep time available after landing instead of treating the entry document as the final residence record. The page’s displayed prices carry a 2018 effective date, so this review does not present that table as a newly confirmed personal quotation. The published visa contact is [email protected].
Obtain the current financial and travel instructions from your sponsor
De Montfort University Dubai gives another clearly attributed sequence: accept the offer, complete admission and financial procedures, then begin the sponsored visa application. It lists an application form, undertaking, signed guidelines, insurance form, unconditional offer, passport, photograph and evidence of tuition payment, alongside visa and security-deposit payments. Its passport minimum is six months.
DMU recommends starting around forty-five days before travel. Its stated typical processing period excludes additional security-check time, and it says travel arrangements can follow issuance of the student entry permit. Those institutional timings differ from Canadian University Dubai’s eight-week recommendation without establishing a contradiction in immigration law. Use the sponsoring institution’s current instruction for the intended intake. DMU distinguishes visa-related costs from tuition and says the exact amount is confirmed during the offer and application process; its contact is [email protected]. This review establishes neither an individual approval nor a universal all-inclusive student-visa fee.
