The screening expansion is already in effect

The United States expanded online presence review to I foreign-media, TN professional-worker and TD dependant visa applicants from 1 October 2026. The State Department announced the change on 18 September and instructs applicants in those classifications to make all social media profiles public or open. This current follow-up explains an operative screening requirement; it is not a new announcement issued on 29 October.

The official screening notice is the resource for checking the categories added and the account-setting instruction. It describes an extension of vetting already applied to specified other classifications, rather than a new immigration status or an exemption from ordinary visa eligibility. The notice supplies no universal additional processing period or guarantee that making profiles public will lead to issuance.

TN professionals must distinguish citizenship, visa and admission

The State Department’s TN guidance concerns eligible Canadian and Mexican citizens performing qualifying prearranged professional work. Permanent residence in Canada or Mexico alone does not create TN eligibility. The occupation and qualifications must meet the applicable professional criteria, and the route is not a general permission for self-employment.

Mexican citizens require a TN visa to request admission in that classification. Canadian citizens generally do not need a TN visa and may seek TN status at a port of entry, although particular family circumstances and voluntary consular applications require attention. The October notice addresses visa applicants; it should not be rewritten as proof that every Canadian seeking TN admission must first obtain a consular visa.

Use the TN guidance to establish the correct process and the family’s situation before booking interviews. A worker’s own nationality and a spouse’s visa requirement are separate questions. For an illustrative Canadian professional with a non-Canadian spouse, the next step is to check the derivative instructions rather than assume the same document exemption covers the entire family.

Media work requires the appropriate professional category

The I visa guidance covers representatives of foreign media travelling temporarily to perform qualifying informational or educational activities essential to the foreign-media function. It distinguishes reporting and news gathering from activities primarily intended as commercial entertainment or advertising. The organisation’s overseas base and the actual assignment matter.

The same resource states that working media representatives cannot use the Visa Waiver Program or a visitor visa for professional media work. A tourist’s nationality exemption therefore should not be assumed to cover a reporting assignment. Use the I visa page to match the purpose before completing the application, including any required employment contract or professional credential for the particular media arrangement.

Complete the DS-160 and assemble evidence for the category

The official Consular Electronic Application Center provides the DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application. It instructs applicants to retain the application ID, save regularly and select the location where they will apply. It also states that applicants generally must electronically sign and submit their own application even if another person helped prepare it.

The TN and I instructions require the DS-160 confirmation page and the relevant passport and application evidence. TN applicants should use the employment-document subsection for the proposed duties, duration, qualifications and remuneration. Media applicants should use their category’s supporting-evidence instructions. The expanded screening requirement supplements these materials; an open social media profile does not replace a contract, credential or explanation of the planned activity.

Check charges and appointment instructions before paying

The State Department’s category guidance lists a USD 185 non-refundable visa application fee for these non-petition categories, with possible nationality-based issuance charges after approval. The official visa-fee resource and the receiving mission’s instructions help establish what is payable and how it should be paid. Do not assume a third party’s combined quotation is the government fee.

Applicants preparing an interview should follow the operative account-setting instruction and the mission’s current document and scheduling requirements. The reviewed notice does not set a separate deadline for every existing application or explain every platform-specific privacy control. Where implementation in an individual pending case is unclear, obtain instructions from the processing mission rather than infer that the case is exempt. Visa issuance and admission remain separate decisions, and no reviewed source promises an individual approval date.
