Paying for an earlier US visa interview does not guarantee approval
The optional visitor-visa pilot runs through December at selected posts. Applicants still need the ordinary application, supporting evidence and any additional processing.

Check whether the pilot covers the filing location
The United States is offering some visitor-visa applicants an earlier interview for an additional US$750 under a voluntary pilot running through 31 December 2026. The State Department’s notice, updated on 18 August, makes clear that buying an appointment does not buy a visa or faster adjudication. This is a current guide to the operating pilot, not a new November launch.
The listed locations are US missions in Canada and Mexico, plus the embassies in Bogotá, Guatemala City, San José and Tegucigalpa. Eligible B-visa applicants first pay the ordinary US$185 application charge and obtain a regular interview appointment. Paid slots are limited and subject to availability. Once selected, the additional payment must be made within ten minutes. The appointment cannot be rescheduled and the extra fee is non-refundable. Use the official pilot notice and the post’s own scheduling account to check availability.
Prepare the same evidence of a temporary visit
The State Department’s Visitor Visa guide remains the resource for the underlying application. Applicants need a valid passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, any required application-fee receipt and a compliant photograph where the upload fails. The ordinary passport rule is validity for six months beyond the intended stay, subject to country-specific agreements. Each person needing a visa requires a separate application.
The consular officer can request evidence of the journey’s purpose, an intention to depart and ability to pay the travel costs. Evidence of employment or family ties can help explain the applicant’s circumstances. Someone else may cover the cost, but assurances from US relatives do not replace the applicant’s own qualification. The guide says an invitation letter or affidavit of support is not required for a visitor application. An applicant should therefore prepare evidence that answers the relevant questions, rather than assume a paid interview or an elaborate invitation removes them.
Check the DS-160 before signing it
The official DS-160 FAQ explains that electronic signing certifies that the answers have been read, understood and are true to the applicant’s knowledge. Assistance with the form does not generally transfer that responsibility to an agent. A third party helping someone unable to complete it must be identified on the signature page; the applicant normally still endorses the application. The FAQ gives separate signing arrangements for children under sixteen and people physically unable to complete the form.
The same FAQ says surnames should follow the passport and explains what to do where the passport contains only one name. It also says a different consular post can access the submitted form through the confirmation-page barcode. Use this resource to resolve form questions and retain the confirmation page for the interview. Accurate travel and identity information matters more than completing a draft quickly; false or misleading statements can have serious immigration consequences.
Allow for further processing after the interview
The department’s Administrative Processing Information page explains that a completed case may be refused under section 221(g) where eligibility has not been established. The officer may request documents or determine that additional checks are necessary. Further processing can later lead to issuance or a continuing refusal, depending on the case. Its duration varies, so an earlier interview is not a guaranteed departure date.
Where the officer asks for additional documents, the page advises supplying a complete response promptly. It gives one year from refusal to provide the requested information before a new application and fee are required. That is a response period for such cases, not permission to ignore an earlier instruction or wait a year unnecessarily. Follow the actual refusal notice and submission channel. For an illustrative traveller with an urgent meeting, the useful sequence is to establish eligibility for the pilot, prepare a complete ordinary application and leave room for further checks. The pilot’s December end date does not guarantee that an interviewed applicant receives a decision before year-end.
