Applicants to the Vatican’s Swiss Guard should plan for a 27-month commitment
The current recruitment page differs from an older annual report; applicants also need separate upload and postal document packs.

Check the current service commitment and entry conditions
The Pontifical Swiss Guard’s current requirements page asks candidates to commit to at least 27 months. Its 2024 annual report instead described a 26-month minimum. The reviewed requirements page does not establish when that wording changed, so this is a current recruitment guide rather than a newly dated policy announcement. Applicants planning study, employment or a move to the Vatican should confirm the term attached to their actual offer.
The current criteria include Swiss citizenship, practising Catholic faith, male sex, unmarried status on entry and age nineteen to thirty. They specify completed Swiss Army recruit training, an EFZ vocational qualification or Matura, good character, sound health and a category-B driving licence. The stated height benchmark is 1.74 metres. The page’s marriage conditions require age twenty-five, five years already served and a further three-year commitment; joining is not presented as immediate married-family relocation.
Separate documents uploaded online from those sent by post
The Guard’s application page organises uploaded material into three packs. The first is the personal-information form with a photograph. The second contains school and vocational records, the qualification certificate with marks or Matura, available employment references, birth-register extract, family-book copy, baptism and confirmation evidence, and criminal-record and debt-enforcement extracts.
The military pack includes the specified service-book pages—3, 5, 12, 13, 36 and 37—and available recruitment performance, control and health-profile documents. The page separately asks for the parish priest’s character reference or recommendation and the medical certificate with drug-test laboratory results by post. Do not assume that uploading the three files completes those postal requirements. Its upload field accepts PDF or Word files up to ten megabytes each, and asks for the earliest possible entry date. Use that field to state availability, rather than treating it as a reserved start date.
Arrange the prescribed medical form with the examining doctor
The official medical certificate instructs the examining doctor to send it promptly and directly to the recruitment office at Messmer Personalmanagement GmbH, Zaunstrasse 13, 8750 Glarus. It is a six-page examination form, ending with the doctor’s fitness assessment, date, stamp and signature. Give the practitioner the Guard’s form rather than assuming an ordinary short fitness letter supplies the requested information. Have the identity, birth, address, blood-group and social-insurance details requested on the first page available for the practitioner.
The form covers medical and family history, general and specific examination findings, eyesight and hearing, vaccination and allergy information, current treatment and relevant previous interventions. It asks that supporting records of operations, accidents or hospital stays be attached where applicable. These fields are for the examining practitioner’s assessment; the reviewed form does not provide a list from which an applicant can reliably determine personal acceptance or rejection. Its stated routing also means the medical pack follows a different handling process from the application’s uploaded education documents.
Understand the selection stages and who pays the examination
The Guard’s recruitment-process page describes initial document screening followed, where suitable, by an interview and aptitude assessment in Glarus. The interview addresses motivation, values and connection to Christian faith; a computer-based psychological assessment follows. Candidates who pass proceed to a recruitment day in Zurich with the commander and chaplain, where the decision on acceptance is made.
The page says the decision and information on further steps follow approximately two weeks after that recruitment day. That interval starts at the later selection event, not when an application is first uploaded. The same instructions require the official medical form for the preliminary examination in Switzerland and place that examination’s cost on the candidate. Dental treatment must be completed before joining. Obtain a practitioner’s quotation because no fixed examination price was established. The recruitment contact published on the process page is +41 55 640 82 24. No current application fee, annual application deadline or guaranteed place in a particular intake was verified.
