Yemeni passport applicants in the United States should keep records of their old document

Washington’s consular instructions require the previous passport for renewal. Applicants should preserve its details for tracking and check US visa and admission rules separately.

Keep a copy before sending the old passport

The Yemeni embassy in Washington asks renewal applicants to submit the original previous passport and explicitly advises keeping a copy before sending it. This guide explains existing instructions. The embassy says old passports are cancelled and returned with the new documents. Applicants with a visa in the old booklet should therefore plan to retain it and check the issuing country’s rules before travelling.

The renewal instructions require the full four-part name in Arabic and English, a left-thumb impression and signature for adults, and three recent colour photographs meeting the specified size and background requirements. They list a US$115 money order payable to the Embassy of Yemen; cash and personal cheques are not accepted. A prepaid tracked return envelope is required. Confirm current arrangements before mailing an irreplaceable document, particularly where a name, date of birth or profession needs correction.

Track the consular application with the appropriate identifier

The embassy’s separate passport tracking resource tells renewal applicants to use the number of the old passport submitted to the consulate. A first passport application for a child is tracked with the birth-certificate number, while a child previously added to a parent’s passport uses the addition-sticker number. Keeping the relevant identifier separately avoids losing access to the enquiry route while the original document is away.

The tracking page directs people with incomplete files to the Washington consular section. A courier delivery confirmation establishes delivery, not completion or approval. Retain both the postal reference and the consular identifier so an enquiry can distinguish a missing shipment from a file awaiting documents. No reviewed resource guarantees that a particular application will finish before an already booked flight.

A valid US visa may remain in an expired passport

The US State Department’s visa basics guidance explains that a valid, undamaged visa in an expired passport can be used together with a new valid passport from the same country, provided the visa matches the principal purpose of travel. Travellers must not detach the visa and move it into the new booklet: doing so invalidates it. The old passport is retained as the visa carrier, not used as a substitute for the new valid travel document.

That guidance is conditional. It does not revive a cancelled or revoked visa, change the permitted purpose, or guarantee admission. Someone replacing a lost passport cannot simply rely on the rule for a visa still physically present in an expired booklet. Establish which document is available, whether the visa remains valid and whether other restrictions apply before planning a return journey.

Check the US admission deadline independently

The State Department’s explanation of visa expiry distinguishes permission to travel to a port of entry from permission to remain in the United States. The authorized admission period is decided by immigration authorities and recorded separately, including on Form I-94. Receiving a new Yemeni passport does not extend that admission period or convert a visa into permission to stay longer.

Review the existing admission record and any separate immigration approval before waiting for passport processing. If more time is needed, use the relevant US immigration procedure rather than assume the consular renewal supplies an extension. The passport application fee pays for a Yemeni document; it is not a payment for US status.

Review the nationality restriction before leaving

The State Department’s current proclamation notice lists Yemen among countries subject to full visa-issuance suspension from 1 January 2026, with limited exceptions. It says the proclamation applies to people outside the United States on the effective date without a valid visa then, and did not revoke visas valid on that date. Lawful permanent residents and certain dual nationals using a non-restricted nationality’s passport are among the exceptions. A fresh Yemeni passport does not itself overcome the restriction. Anyone uncertain about departure and readmission should resolve that issue before travel, rather than assume renewal makes return possible.
