Obtain the school evidence for the correct application
Zambia’s immigration department lists a school covering letter and the latest results transcript or progress report for renewing a study permit. A new application has a different evidence list, including the institution’s acceptance, certified passport details, a report from a Zambian government medical facility and sponsor information demonstrating status and finances. Students should ask the school for the renewal documents before their current permission expires.
The department’s permit-types guidance also requires an application to vary the permit when changing school, supported by the new school’s acceptance and the previous school’s latest results or progress report. A new admission letter alone should not be treated as an amended immigration permission. This guide was checked on 2 November and announces no new deadline. Use the department’s study-permit section and application link to distinguish an initial application, renewal and school change.
The renewal price differs from the initial permit charge
The immigration department’s published private-sector permit table lists a ZMW 9,000 statutory charge for study-permit issuance and ZMW 12,000 for renewal. It separates those amounts from payment administration charges. The displayed card-payment totals are ZMW 9,090 for issuance and ZMW 12,120 for renewal; the mobile-money totals are ZMW 9,045 and ZMW 12,060 respectively. Check which payment method and service the transaction actually selects before paying.
The same table lists a study-permit variation at a ZMW 9,000 statutory charge and a passport-change variation at ZMW 2,000, each with separately displayed payment administration amounts. Replacing passport details is therefore a different transaction from renewing permission or changing the study arrangements. The figures quoted here come from the department’s published table, rather than a general student-budget estimate. Tuition, medical examination and qualification evaluation are separate costs. Use the official fee page to check the service name and payable total when filing; do not assume the initial permit price also covers every later change or the next renewal.
Foreign qualifications can require a separate evaluation
The Zambia Qualifications Authority, ZAQA, distinguishes verifying that a qualification is genuine from evaluating a foreign qualification against the Zambian Qualifications Framework. Verification checks the awarding body’s authority, the approved qualification and whether the certificate was actually issued. Evaluation establishes comparability through the learning outcomes or framework levels. Ask the admitting institution which assessment it needs for the qualification supporting the offer.
ZAQA’s service page lists ZMW 1,200 for verification and evaluation of foreign qualifications and about 60 working days for foreign processing. It explains that response times depend on the awarding body’s cooperation, so students should not plan an assessment around an assumed immediate result. Applications use the linked eQMIS service; an individual or an institution can apply. Payment evidence should identify the application number and be sent through the authority’s stated payment procedure. Use this assessment resource for qualification evidence and follow up against the correct application record. A ZAQA result does not itself grant a study permit, and a school’s willingness to admit someone does not establish that a requested foreign-qualification assessment is already complete.
Confirm commencement before relying on the 2026 categories
Parliament’s published Immigration Control Act 2026 contains a distinction between full-time study permits and temporary study permits for part-time or distance education. It also addresses changing the educational institution and including a child below seven in the application. However, section 1 expressly makes commencement dependent on a date appointed by the minister through a statutory instrument. Publication of the Act on 8 April is therefore not, by itself, evidence that every new category is operational.
The official commencement instrument was not established in the resources reviewed for this guide. Applicants, particularly part-time students or those bringing a young child, should ask immigration which operative provision and application category apply to their case. Use Parliament’s Act to identify the proposed statutory distinction, while obtaining confirmation of the current procedure from the department before payment or travel. Read the conditions on the individual permit and establish the relevant expiry and filing instructions directly; neither a legislative publication nor an application receipt should be assumed to extend existing permission.
