Prepare the spouse’s application and the local guarantor’s evidence
A foreign spouse needs both partners’ documents. Immigration’s spouse checklist calls for the local spouse’s close-relative guarantee, proof of funds, accommodation and residential status, alongside the foreign spouse’s application letter and the local spouse’s support letter to the Chief Director. The file also includes passport details, two certified likeness photographs, marriage evidence, a radiological certificate and police clearance from the country of origin or last permanent residence within six months.
The checklist calls its form I.F.S; regulations say I.F.5. Obtain the current form. Extension needs both letters and the current permit; permanent applications add a local police clearance within six months.
Resolve the initial fee discrepancy before making a payment
The spouse requirements page quotes a non-refundable USD 500 for an initial application, USD 300 for extension and USD 500 for the permanent category, with USD 300 per dependent. The separate general Fees table instead lists an ordinary spouse residence applicant at USD 300. These official descriptions do not establish whether the general table refers to renewal or whether one initial amount has been superseded.
Ask Immigration to identify the payable amount for the exact stage and any dependents before paying. A difference of USD 200 is material to the principal applicant’s budget, and the dependent charge must not be mistaken for a fee covering an entire family. Keep the official payment instruction with the application reference. The public pages reviewed do not identify a refund right that resolves this disagreement, and the spouse checklist expressly describes its charges as non-refundable. No individual invoice or clarification was obtained for this guide.
Check residence eligibility separately from the document list
The department-hosted Immigration Regulations compilation says residence applications go to the immigration authority on form I.F.5 and require good character and payment. It provides a discretionary residence category for a resident’s spouse or minor child. Its rules also address applications made while already inside Zimbabwe, including a ministerial-consent restriction with stated exceptions. A visitor should therefore ask whether an in-country application is permitted in their circumstances rather than infer that a wedding alone changes immigration status.
The compilation identifies itself as amended through 2005, so it is historical legal context rather than proof that no later amendment affects a current case. It also distinguishes permits issued for a fixed period from indefinite residence. The current spouse permanent checklist supplies documents and fees but not a complete eligibility assessment. Confirm the current qualifying period and application location with Immigration before choosing that category. No pending-application right to remain or permission to work was established from the checklist.
Obtain the correct police clearance and keep its payment evidence
The Zimbabwe Republic Police clearance guide describes submission of fingerprint forms with the original receipt proving the vetting payment. It distinguishes clearance-vetting forms from the police form used for criminal fingerprints. Applicants should obtain the appropriate forms and take them to a local police station for fingerprinting; people abroad can have fingerprints taken in their country of residence.
The guide says fingerprints taken outside Zimbabwe attract a USD 75 vetting charge and can be sent by courier to CID Headquarters, Morris Depot, at Tenth Street and Josiah Chinamano Avenue, Harare, with return arrangements. Confirm the current payment destination and charge with police before remitting money under older published banking instructions. This Zimbabwean clearance process is relevant to the local certificate for a permanent spouse file; it does not replace a foreign-country clearance required for a first application. No police completion time was confirmed.
Ask the receiving office about timing and the current submission channel
Immigration’s contact page places head office at Chingaira Building, corner Leopold Takawira and Herbert Chitepo, Harare, with published weekday hours of 7.45am to 4.45pm, excluding public holidays. Use the department’s official contact and service channels to confirm which office or electronic route receives the spouse category, which form applies and how to resolve the fee discrepancy.
Give the current permit’s expiry and identify whether the request is initial, extension or permanent. The reviewed pages do not publish a spouse-specific filing window or a guaranteed decision time. Start that check before the existing permission expires; this guide does not create a grace period or establish that uploading documents automatically extends residence. An application receipt and a granted permit serve different purposes.
