Prepare the renewal file before the current permit expires
Zimbabwe’s Immigration Department requires students seeking an extension to provide academic evidence as well as their current permit. Its student-permit checklist asks for a letter requesting an extension, a letter from the college or university, previous term or semester results and confirmation that studies are continuing. This is a current guide to the published procedure, checked on 2 November, rather than a newly announced renewal deadline.
The Department lists a non-refundable USD200 student charge and USD300 per accompanying dependent. Initial applications additionally require an acceptance letter, Education Ministry clearance, accommodation evidence, passport records, photographs, a radiological certificate and a police certificate no older than six months. Foreign documents must be notarised and local copies certified by a Commissioner of Oaths, with English translations. Use the student checklist to obtain university records before submitting a renewal. It does not establish a guaranteed processing time or an automatic extension while a case is pending; confirm submission timing against the individual permit expiry.
Foreign qualifications may need an independent assessment
The Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education assesses qualifications for authenticity, level and recognition for further study, employment or professional purposes. Its official assessment page distinguishes education obtained within Zimbabwe, qualifications from abroad and applications by foreign citizens. It lists a USD200 non-refundable assessment charge for non-Zimbabwean citizens; applicants should confirm their applicable category with the Council before paying rather than use the lower domestic-qualification fee.
The Council recommends bringing original certificates and clear copies, including information on the reverse, to its Harare office. Originals are checked and should not be left behind. Those unable to attend may arrange payment with Finance, email certified copies and payment evidence, and follow up by telephone. Written results are expected after a minimum of four weeks. Use this assessment service where the institution requires confirmation of a foreign qualification, allowing for its separate timetable. An assessment result does not replace an acceptance letter or confer immigration permission.
School pupils have a distinct guardian procedure
The Immigration Department’s official brochure distinguishes a scholars’ permit from the student route used for other studies. For a school pupil it lists an acceptance letter, Ministry of Education clearance, passport evidence, photographs, accommodation evidence and a radiological certificate. It also asks for an affidavit from the local guardian accepting custody during study and an affidavit from the parent assigning that custody. Families should arrange those documents with the school and guardian before assuming that an adult’s student checklist is sufficient.
The brochure lists a USD100 non-refundable scholars’ charge and says a renewal requires an application letter, the current permit and school confirmation that study continues. Because the brochure is an older official publication, confirm the present fee and document instructions directly before filing. The important distinction is the applicant’s educational category and the guardian responsibility, not simply whether the family informally calls the child a student. Use the brochure’s scholars section to identify the additional custody questions to resolve.
Check both the institution and the actual programme
The Council’s Registration and Accreditation Directorate is responsible for institutional registration, programme accreditation and evaluation of foreign qualifications under the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education Act. These are separate checks: identifying a recognised institution does not, by itself, establish that every programme advertised in its name has the required approval.
Before paying tuition or arranging a move, ask the institution to identify the exact qualification, awarding body and programme approval, and seek confirmation through the Council where necessary. Use the Directorate’s official page to identify the regulator responsible for that enquiry. Keep the answer with the admission and immigration records, especially if a recruitment intermediary is involved. A regulated course, a favourable assessment of previous study and a valid residence permit each answer a different question. Students need all applicable requirements resolved before relying on the proposed study arrangement.
